Brandin Podziemski’s Opportunity with Warriors: A Reality Check

Brandin Podziemski is experiencing the increased responsibility he has desired.

The 23-year-old has been keen to handle the ball more, aiming to demonstrate his ability as a lead creator and offer a glimpse into the future of Warriors basketball. Steph Curry’s absence over the past seven weeks has presented him with this chance.

Mixed Results During Curry’s Absence

The results have been inconsistent. Recently, his performance has dipped.

During the first five games of this six-game road trip, Podziemski shot 36% from the field and 23.1% from deep. He also recorded nearly as many turnovers (12) as assists (18).

This sample reflects Podziemski’s struggles as the primary option.

Coach Kerr’s Perspective

“This is a great experience for Brandin,” head coach Steve Kerr said in Atlanta.

Kerr noted the extended period without Steph Curry, saying: “I mean, 20 games without Steph.”

Glimpses of Potential

There have been impressive moments for Podziemski. He recorded consecutive 15-rebound games at the end of February, including in a win over Denver.

After a 25-point, 10-rebound performance against the Timberwolves, Podziemski said he’s learned that he can do it.

But, according to one report, not quite enough.

Expectations vs. Reality

Given his background and draft position (19th overall pick), Podziemski shouldn’t be criticised too harshly for not immediately excelling as a primary offensive initiator. He created these expectations himself with displays of confidence.

That level of responsibility is usually handled by All-Star calibre players. Podziemski, at least currently, is not at that level.

Podziemski has been a good player since joining the league. He takes charges, makes extra passes, and rebounds well for his position. The past several weeks have been an opportunity to demonstrate that he offers more than just a strong foundation.

However, he hasn’t made a significant leap forward during this period.

Recent Struggles

Podziemski’s most recent performance, in a loss to the Hawks, was one of his least impactful as a professional. He went 2-for-6 for five points and had three turnovers in 24 minutes. His team needed him to provide scoring, but he struggled to get shots off.

The game before in Detroit wasn’t much better. These struggles coincided with facing elite perimeter defenders in Ausar Thompson and Dyson Daniels.

Usually, Curry draws those assignments.

Kerr described this stretch as a great experience for Podziemski.
