Belinda Bencic has spoken out in defence of Coco Gauff, pushing back against criticism of Gauff’s serve. Bencic made her comments during a Media Day press conference at the Credit One Charleston Open.
Bencic Praises Gauff’s Game
Bencic and Gauff have a head-to-head record of 5-2 in Gauff’s favour. Five of their seven matches have gone to three sets, including their most recent match at the Miami Open. Gauff has faced scrutiny for her serve, particularly since winning Roland Garros.
Bencic addressed Gauff’s game when meeting the press. She said Gauff is a tough opponent, adding that they always have great matches. Bencic also noted Gauff’s admirable movement. She said that Gauff makes the court feel much smaller and makes it hard to attack, forcing opponents to replay balls.
Bencic stated that Gauff’s serve is very good and fast when she puts it in. She acknowledged that Gauff sometimes has problems with rhythm but doesn’t think she should receive so much negative feedback. She highlighted that Gauff’s game is unique with a different rhythm, changing speed, spins and rhythm. Bencic added that Gauff can play everywhere on the court and moves great, making her a deserving No. 3 or No. 4 in the world.
Bencic on Openness About Women’s Health
Bencic, a former world No. 4, has been more open with the media since returning from maternity leave. She spoke about dealing with menstrual cramps during her loss to Gauff at the Hard Rock Stadium. Bencic expressed her approval that it is no longer a taboo topic.
She noted that other female athletes have also spoken about being done hiding this topic. Bencic clarified that it’s not an excuse for losing a match, but it is something they deal with.
Bencic’s Charleston Campaign
Bencic is the No. 3 seed in Charleston. Bencic was champion in Charleston in 2022. She will play her opening match against Dayana Yastremska on Tuesday.
