Ben White Returns to England Squad After Four-Year Absence

Ben White is back in the England squad after a four-year absence, with Thomas Tuchel stating the Arsenal defender needs to “clear the air” with his team-mates.

White, 28, last played for England in March 2022. He was named in the squad for the Qatar World Cup later that year, but left the camp for “personal reasons” following a disagreement with then-assistant manager Steve Holland.

Tuchel Opens a New Page

Tuchel said, “I think everyone deserves a second chance,” when questioned about White’s return to the squad.

The current England boss added, “Once I asked Ben if he would be ready to play for me and for England he straight away, and without hesitation, said he would love that and he was desperate to come back.”

Tuchel stated he wasn’t fully aware of what happened previously and wanted to “open a new page”.

Tuchel believes White needs to resolve any issues with his team-mates. “I think it’s necessary he clears the air with team-mates and I think he will when players come back, who were in the World Cup with him.”

White’s Eagerness to Return

Tuchel said White did not hesitate when offered a recall. He described White’s reaction as “very euphoric, and very positive and he was emotional about it, which shows me that he really means it”.

The England boss added: “The way he behaves and has trained in camp has been very good and shows his quality.”

White’s versatility is an asset, as he can play at both right-back and centre-back.

Friendlies and Squad Selection

England are scheduled to play friendlies against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley. These matches are the final international break before Tuchel announces his squad for the World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada this summer.

Tuchel has named a 35-man squad for the matches against Uruguay on Friday (19:45 GMT), and then Japan on Tuesday (19:45 GMT). Eleven players, including captain Harry Kane, and Arsenal duo Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, will join the squad on Saturday morning after being given time off to rest.

Alexander-Arnold Omission

Tuchel again omitted Real Madrid right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold. The former Liverpool defender, 27, has not been selected since June last year.

“It’s just a choice,” said Tuchel. “A sporting choice. A difficult choice and maybe a hard choice – and maybe to a certain degree unfair, but these choices have to be made.”

White has started just 15 times for Arsenal this season, but his performances in Arsenal’s run to a Carabao Cup final defeat by Manchester City and the Champions League last 16 got him the nod.

Tuchel said the choice was for Ben and for Tino Livramento, to stick with the guys who actually had good camps with us in September, November, December.

“They also need the minutes and there are a lot of good players for this position.”

Tuchel added: “It was a chance to meet him in person”.

Tuchel said White’s reaction “came within seconds” following an injury to Jarrell Quansah.
