Bayern Munich vs FC Köln: Goretzka’s Emotional Farewell

Bayern Munich’s final Bundesliga match against FC Köln was set against the backdrop of Leon Goretzka’s emotional farewell. The match took place in the Allianz Arena.

Goretzka’s Last Chapter

With Bayern already crowned Bundesliga champions and FC Köln safe from relegation and out of contention for European spots, the match held little competitive weight. Instead, the focus shifted to the upcoming cup final against VfB Stuttgart and Goretzka’s send-off. Manager Vincent Kompany included the 31-year-old Goretzka in the starting line-up for Bayern’s final Bundesliga match against FC Köln. Kompany said Goretzka earned his place through years of performance.

Kompany plans to give Goretzka a special send-off moment with a substitution near the end of the match. However, Kompany added a caveat: if Bayern are not winning, Goretzka might need to leave the pitch faster in the final five minutes. Raphael Guerreiro and Nicolas Jackson will also be saying goodbye.

Bayern’s Line-Up and Köln’s Defence

Bayern started with their usual formation. Köln’s coach, René Wagner, was expected to use a defensive five-man defence. Köln’s attack includes Kaminski, Bülter and El Mala, with potential support from Castro-Montes.

Bayern’s starting line-up included Lennart Karl and Tom Bischof instead of Stanisic and Olise, who were on the bench. It marked Karl’s first start after a muscle fibre tear.

Neuer’s Contract Extension

After the match, Manuel Neuer was scheduled to receive the trophy for Bayern’s 35th league title. The club officially confirmed Neuer would remain with Bayern for another year. Max Eberl had previously hinted at the extension.

Eberl emphasised Neuer’s importance amidst the changes he has initiated. Eberl stated that they are not at the end yet and could still win the double. He also noted that what they had already achieved this season was special.

The match against 1. FC Köln was expected to be Goretzka’s last chapter after eight years. Once the final whistle blows, the sporting aspect fades somewhat as Manuel Neuer accepts the trophy for the 35th league title.
