Ausar Thompson’s Defensive Growth Boosts Pistons’ Playoff Run

Ausar Thompson’s value as a generational defender has become apparent during the playoffs. His defensive improvement stems from a decrease in fouls compared to last year. This allows him to play more minutes and prevents opponents from gaining easy points. The Pistons will require his intense physical defence to progress, and avoiding foul trouble will be essential.

Reduced Fouls, Increased Minutes

Last year, Thompson averaged 4.2 fouls per game over a 6-game series. He played only 22.5 minutes per game, partly due to foul trouble. His high foul rate created a challenge for the team’s minutes distribution.

This year, Thompson has averaged just 1.9 fouls per game while playing 32.7 minutes per game. Learning to defend without fouling has been an underrated development for Ausar.

Disrupting the Opposition Offence

The decreased fouling hasn’t diminished Thompson’s defensive aggression. He has averaged 2.3 steals and 2.3 blocks per game in the first round. Thompson’s defence helped his teammates get into a better flow even after they fell into an early deficit.

The Detroit defence held steady, leading to easier transition baskets at times.

Challenges Ahead Against Cavaliers

Thompson faces a more challenging matchup in the next round. He is likely to be matched up against Donovan Mitchell or James Harden. Both are savvy veterans at drawing reckless fouls.

They may employ tactics similar to those used last year to get Ausar in foul trouble. Since Thompson will have a size advantage, he needs to be even more careful with his defence. Referees might subconsciously favour smaller players, making defending Cleveland’s guards a different challenge.

If Thompson can navigate this test without excessive fouls, his defensive evolution may be near complete.
