Asuka’s WWE Future in Doubt Amid Contract and Release Issues

Asuka’s future with WWE is uncertain following emotional scenes after her match with IYO SKY at WWE Backlash. The Empress of Tomorrow embraced her former protégé, with tears in her eyes, and gave several waves to the audience. These actions have led to speculation about her status as a performer.

Tributes appeared on social media almost instantly. Uncertainty surrounds Asuka’s future, even among those within WWE.

Backstage Reaction and Contract Details

Many within the locker room and on the WWE creative team are unsure about Asuka’s future. However, the response regarding Asuka’s contributions has been overwhelmingly positive. WWE is reportedly very happy with Asuka’s contributions over the years, with one higher up calling her, “Always reliable no matter what was thrown her way”.

Reports suggest Asuka has signed a new long-term contract with WWE, agreeing to terms in the summer of 2024. The length of the deal is unknown, though most contract extensions during that period were for five years. Despite this, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer reported that Asuka was now semi-retired, with no other specific details provided.

Kairi Sane’s Release and Its Impact

Adding to the uncertainty is the release of Kairi Sane, who was involved in a months-long rivalry with Asuka and IYO SKY. Sane was among more than two dozen WWE Superstars released from their contracts. The release occurred on April 24, ending her latest tenure with the company before her story could be concluded.

Frustration has been expressed by some sources regarding Sane’s release. The frustration specifically emanated from the television time given to Asuka and Kairi without actually paying off Kairi’s part in the story. It is unclear if Sane’s situation has any bearing on Asuka’s current status. Mike Johnson of PWInsider has heard that she may be returning to Japan.

Asuka’s Immediate Plans

Despite the speculation, Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select is reporting that Asuka is planned to take some time off from WWE, but the reasoning has nothing to do with the recent roster cuts. The Empress of Tomorrow is also planned for the May 11 edition of WWE Raw in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Multiple outlets have said that a number of people were saying their farewells to The Empress backstage at Backlash.
