Hanyu Guo faces McCartney Kessler. Guo is ranked World No. 168, Kessler No. 47. Guo is 3-2 in her last five matches. Kessler is 2-3 in her last five matches, a series that includes the Rome main draw, which featured a higher level of competition than Guo has recently dealt with.
Guo has played more matches over the past few weeks than Kessler has, so Guo probably has more rhythm and flow. However, Kessler did not overplay this clay season and might be physically fresher. It’s an interesting test of the rest versus rust question for two tennis players.
