Arsenal responded to their defeat by Manchester City with a 1-0 win over Newcastle, keeping the pressure on their rivals in the Premier League title race. Eberechi Eze’s goal secured the victory, moving Arsenal three points ahead of Manchester City. After the loss to Pep Guardiola’s side, Mikel Arteta referred to the Newcastle game as ‘game one’ of ‘a new league’.
Arteta expressed his satisfaction with the win. He said that they talked about ‘game one’ and how important it was and that they did the job. He added that they wanted bigger margins, but they certainly have done the job.
Arsenal’s Response to Pressure
Manchester City’s win over Burnley had pushed Arsenal into second place, level on points and goal difference but behind on goals scored. This put pressure on Arsenal heading into the game against Newcastle, especially after back-to-back defeats. The relief at the final whistle was evident as players fell to the floor following the victory.
Looking ahead to the remaining league games, Arteta stated his readiness to deal with the pressure of trying to end the club’s wait for the title. He said that he doesn’t expect, after 22 years of not winning it, that it’s going to be a path of roses and beautiful music around it, and that it’s going to be like this and they are ready for it.
Advantage Arsenal, For Now
Arsenal will move six points clear of Manchester City if they beat Fulham in their home game next week. However, City have two games in hand, starting with their match against Everton on 4 May. City were playing Southampton in the FA Cup semi-final.
According to Opta, Arsenal have a 72.44% chance of lifting the Premier League trophy at the end of the season, with City on 27.56%.
Players’ Perspective
Captain Martin Odegaard spoke about the team’s effort. He said it was tough, very intense, very physical. He added that they did everything they could and they got the win, and that the most important thing was to bounce back with a win and get over it.
Arsenal are without a major trophy since their FA Cup triumph of 2020. This came in Arteta’s first season in charge.
Former Crystal Palace and Brighton striker Glenn Murray said on BBC Radio 5 Live that Arsenal have given absolutely everything on that pitch, and you can’t question their fight.
