Arsenal secured a 1-0 win against Brighton, increasing their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points after Manchester City’s draw with Nottingham Forest. Bukayo Saka’s early goal made the difference in a fractious match on the south coast.
Saka’s Early Strike Secures the Points
Bukayo Saka’s ninth-minute strike, deflected off Carlos Baleba, found its way past Bart Verbruggen, proving to be the decisive moment. It was one of only two shots on target for Arsenal. Arsenal’s defence, led by Gabriel and Piero Hincapie, managed to keep Brighton at bay despite the absence of the injured William Saliba.
Brighton dominated possession, registering 60 per cent, but struggled to break down Arsenal’s resilient defence.
Hurzeler Accuses Arsenal of Time-Wasting
Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler criticised Arsenal’s tactics, stating that “only one side tried to play football.” He accused Arsenal of time-wasting, particularly involving David Raya, who went to ground on three occasions. Mikel Arteta responded to Hurzeler’s comments by saying, “What a surprise.”
Brighton’s Frustrations Grow
Brighton created their best chance after only two minutes when David Raya’s pass went straight to Baleba, whose attempted chip was cleared off the line by Gabriel. The hosts pinned Arsenal back for extended periods. Raya made a save from Georginio Rutter as the home fans grew frustrated with Arsenal’s perceived time-wasting.
Nervy Finale for the Gunners
Substitute Kai Havertz had a chance to extend Arsenal’s lead, but his effort was saved by Verbruggen. Arsenal then had to endure a nervy finale to secure the three points. The final whistle, and news of Manchester City’s draw, prompted celebrations from the travelling fans.
Arsenal opened up a seven-point gap at the top of the Premier League, although they have played a game more.
