Angel City Football Club are back in action following an international break, looking to recapture the form that saw them win their first three matches of the season.
Their first defeat came against the Orlando Pride, April 3. They now resume their season at home against the Portland Thorns.
Angel City’s Perspective
Coach Alex Straus reflected on the team’s initial four games, acknowledging both positive and negative moments. Straus emphasised the importance of maintaining focus and continuing to work hard, regardless of wins or losses.
“We need to stay on a path and work on what we need to work. We know we a have a lot of work to be done. This is a new beginning and it’s the next chapter in the history of this club.”
Midfielder Ary Borges highlighted the significance of the upcoming matches. “Everybody is looking forward to this game. We know how important it is to get the three points at home.”
Best Start Since Inaugural Season
Angel City started the week in fourth place in the NWSL with nine points. They were one of only a few teams with just four games played.
This is their best start since the inaugural season (2022), when Angel City also had nine points through its first four games.
Including Sunday’s match, Angel City have seven games before the World Cup break. Five of those seven will be at home.
Injury Updates
Jun Endo, who made six appearances last season after recovering from an ACL injury, could make her season debut on Sunday. She suffered a setback during training camp this season.
“Jun will probably be in the roster for Sunday and be ready to play,” Straus said.
However, Sydney Leroux remains further away from a return. Leroux hasn’t made an appearance since the final game of the 2024 season.
Claire Emslie, who gave birth last December, has also recently returned to training.
