The rumour mill is in full swing regarding a possible trade involving Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown. The New England Patriots are reportedly a team interested in acquiring him.
Vrabel’s Comments Fuel Speculation
New England coach Mike Vrabel didn’t rule out the possibility of a trade for A.J. Brown. He stated that the team will explore all avenues to strengthen their roster, including trades. “We’re going to try to do everything we can to strengthen our roster through the draft, through free agency, multiple ways of player acquisition,” said Vrabel. “So anything that we can continue to do to strengthen the roster, we’re going to try to do.”
Vrabel also noted the value of past connections, having coached Brown with the Titans from 2019 to 2021.
Eagles’ Stance and Financial Considerations
Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has maintained that Brown is a member of the Eagles. He has given the same response when asked about Brown’s future. However, speculation persists due to financial implications for Philadelphia.
The Eagles are financially incentivised to wait until at least June 1 to officially strike a trade. Trading Brown before June 1 would result in a dead cap hit of more than $40 million, compared to around $20 million after that date.
Patriots’ Need for a Receiver
The Patriots released leading receiver Stefon Diggs earlier in March, creating a void in their receiving corps. They signed former Green Bay receiver Romeo Doubs as a potential option for quarterback Drake Maye. Vrabel noted that the team remains open to bolstering the position.
Vrabel also mentioned other returning receivers on the roster, including Kayshon Boutte, DeMario “Pop” Douglas and 2025 third-round pick Kyle Williams.
Regarding replacing Diggs’ production, Vrabel said, “It’s literally about targets, the efficiency. We all appreciate what Stef did and I really loved being able to coach him — the efficiency in which he was able to catch the ball was impressive.”
He added, “So whether that’s Drake’s accuracy, ball location or Stef’s ability to catch it, that’s something that we’ll have to recreate. I’m not worried about the catches and the overall production. I think we can recreate that. We just have to be very mindful that the efficiency in which we throw and catch it is important.”
The Patriots are looking to strengthen their roster, and the possibility of acquiring A.J. Brown remains open.
