Aberg Leads Players Championship Ahead of Final Round

Ludvig Aberg will take a three-shot lead into the final round of the Players Championship in Florida.

Aberg, who became the first player to be selected for the Ryder Cup without having played in a major in 2023, shot a one-under-par 71 to move to 13 under overall. He is chasing the biggest win of his career at the PGA Tour’s $25m (£18.9m) flagship event.

Thorbjornsen Jumps to Second

Michael Thorbjornsen shot a 67 to leap up to second on the leaderboard, on 10 under par. Cameron Young is one shot behind, after finding water off the tee on the 18th and dropping two shots to finish the day on nine under.

Xander Schauffele, Aberg’s playing partner, struggled with his second shots and posted a two-over 74 to slip five off the pace.

Late Trouble for Fitzpatrick and Rose

Matt Fitzpatrick was 10 under par on the 18th tee, after birdies on the 16th and 17th holes. However, a scruffy double-bogey finish took the shine off his round as he signed for a 69 to be joint fourth on eight under.

Justin Rose reached eight under after a birdie on the 15th but hit balls in the water on 16 and 18. He finished with two bogeys in his final three holes to drop back to six under.

MacIntyre Cards Best Round

Robert MacIntyre started round three at level par but posted the lowest score of the day. He holed nine birdies in a seven-under 65 to end the day six off the pace. It was also his best ever round at the Players Championship.

McIlroy’s Struggles Continue

Defending champion Rory McIlroy stayed at one over after a 72, having overcome a back injury to play this week.

Scottie Scheffler shot a bogey-free five-under 67 to get to four under.
