Paul Sewald Secures First Save for Diamondbacks After Late Rally

Paul Sewald earned a save against the Tigers on Monday, striking out one batter in a perfect inning of work.

Sewald Called Upon to Close Out the Game

The situation didn’t initially appear to require a save, as Arizona had built an 8-0 lead through five frames. However, Detroit mounted a late rally, closing the gap and creating a save opportunity. Sewald was then summoned to protect a three-run lead in the ninth frame.

Sewald avoided any drama by retiring the side in order. He accomplished this on 12 pitches.

Manager’s Confidence in Sewald

Manager Torey Lovullo had previously suggested that Sewald could be the favourite for early save chances. Monday’s bullpen usage solidified this scenario. Sewald has considerable experience in the closer role.

He has racked up 81 regular-season saves between 2021 and 2024.
