Former Scotland rugby union captain Stuart Hogg has been stripped of his MBE, according to an official notice in The Gazette.
MBE Annulled After Guilty Plea
Hogg had been given an MBE in the 2024 New Year honours for his services to rugby. However, the notice in The Gazette stated that the honour would now be “cancelled and annulled”. The full notice in the Gazette reads: “The King has directed that the appointment of Stuart William Hogg to be a Member of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, dated 30 December 2023 shall be cancelled and annulled and that his name shall be erased from the Register of the said Order.”
Details of the Domestic Abuse Charge
In 2024, Hogg pleaded guilty to a domestic abuse charge against his by then estranged wife Gillian. He was subsequently given a one-year community payback order. After he admitted shouting and swearing and acting in an abusive manner towards his estranged wife there were calls to strip him of the honour.
Hogg’s Rugby Career
Former Glasgow Warriors fullback Hogg amassed a century of senior caps for his country. He was also involved in three British and Irish Lions tours. He now plays with Montpellier and remains one of Scotland’s all-time leading try scorers.
Now his name has appeared on a list of people to have their honours taken away.
