Saka’s Arsenal Form: Defensive Workload Blamed for Dip

Bukayo Saka’s recent performances for Arsenal have sparked debate, with questions raised about his current form. The winger has only managed two league goals since December, a period that included two games missed through injury. His contributions are under the microscope as Arsenal chase their first top-flight title since 2004.

Richards Highlights Tactical and Player Issues

Micah Richards has weighed in on Saka’s struggles, pointing to a combination of tactical setup and individual form as the root cause. Speaking on the Rest is Football Podcast alongside Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer, the former Man City defender suggested that Arsenal’s attacking players, including Saka, are burdened with excessive defensive responsibilities.

Richards stated, “When they’re getting on the ball, they’re having to travel too far up the pitch… I think it comes from the manager, because I think they’re having to do too much defensive work.” He believes this defensive workload hinders their ability to influence the game in attacking areas. He added that Saka needs to take responsibility to ensure he performs in the Champions League, FA Cup and the league.

Lineker and Shearer Agree on Tactical Impact

Gary Lineker echoed these concerns, questioning whether Saka can thrive within Arsenal’s current system. He implied that the team’s approach, which requires Saka to track back and defend, may be limiting his attacking prowess. The Gunners are nine points clear in the Premier League.

Saka’s Responsibility to Overcome Challenges

Richards emphasised the need for Saka to rise to the occasion despite the challenges. He stated, “Big players turn up in the big games, and that’s what they need to do.” He believes Saka has the quality to overcome his current struggles and make a significant impact for Arsenal in crucial matches.

Arsenal still have favourable draws in the FA Cup and Champions League quarter-finals next month. Arteta’s team face Championship side Southampton and Portugal’s Sporting in their bid to reach the last four of both cup competitions.

As Arsenal continue their pursuit of silverware in the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League, Saka’s form will be a key factor in their success. He will need to adapt and find ways to influence games despite the tactical demands placed upon him.
