NFLPA’s Leadership Search: Process and Progress Explained

The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) has provided a first-hand account of the last eight months, detailing the process of finding a new executive director. This comes after the previous executive director stepped down following accusations of wrongdoing and a Department of Justice investigation.

Investigation and Interim Leadership

Following the executive director’s departure in July, the Board of Player Representatives elected David White as interim executive director. The NFLPA’s Board of Player Representatives retained WilmerHale to oversee the review, led by Ronald Machen, a former U.S. Attorney. WilmerHale recommended creating a Special Committee to oversee the review and receive updates. The players selected for this committee had no personal or professional connection to the allegations or to anyone under review.

The Special Committee excluded all members of the Executive Committee involved in the prior executive director search, as well as the NFLPA’s general counsel. David White was interviewed along with four other candidates for the interim role. The NFLPA expressed gratitude to David for stepping into a difficult situation.

The Search for a Permanent Executive Director

The Executive Committee, along with the NFLPA president, began identifying candidates for the full-time executive director role. The NFLPA’s general counsel was involved throughout. Introductory calls were held with eight executive search firms. The field was narrowed to four firms for virtual interviews, and then to two.

TurnkeyZRG, led by Len Perna, was ultimately selected. Their experience includes placing high-level executives across sports and labour organisations. TurnkeyZRG committed four managing partners to the search.

Ensuring Fairness and Thorough Vetting

In consultation with WilmerHale, updates were made to the search process. These updates ensured clarity, fairness, and thorough vetting. Candidates who advanced were required to sign Conditions of Candidacy agreements. This allowed for enhanced reference checks and forensic background reviews conducted by the Mintz Group.

Board Approval and Next Steps

In October, the Search Committee presented TurnkeyZRG and the proposed structure to the Board of Player Representatives. A five-lane search was outlined, designed to remain confidential until the final stages. The target decision is aimed for the 2026 Rep Meeting.
