Rugby league is in mourning following the death of John Kear at the age of 71. One of the sport’s most respected figures, Kear passed away on Sunday.
He had been part of the BBC Sport commentary team for the Challenge Cup final between Wigan and Hull KR at Wembley Stadium.
A Stalwart of Castleford and Beyond
Born in Castleford, Kear made 133 appearances for his hometown club between 1978 and 1988. He then transitioned into coaching.
Challenge Cup Glory with Sheffield Eagles
Kear earned widespread acclaim for guiding Sheffield Eagles to a shock Challenge Cup final victory over Wigan in 1998.
Coaching Career and England Role
Kear coached a number of clubs including Hull FC, Wakefield Trinity and Bradford Bulls. He was also coach of the England team in the 2000 World Cup.
During his time as England coach, he led them to the semi-finals.
Kear’s contribution to the sport will be fondly remembered.
