Daria Kasatkina, known as ‘Dasha’ to Aussie fans, is set to face Aryna Sabalenka in a third-round match at the French Open. This follows Kasatkina’s victory over Swiss qualifier Susan Bandecchi. Meanwhile, Kimberly Birrell and Adam Walton suffered defeats.
Kasatkina’s Hard-Fought Victory
Kasatkina overcame Susan Bandecchi in a match that tested her on a scorching day at Roland Garros, winning 7-5, 7-6 (13-11). The second-set tiebreak was particularly intense, lasting 17 minutes. Kasatkina will now compete with Alex de Minaur to be the ‘last Aussie standing’.
Reflecting on the upcoming match with Sabalenka, Kasatkina said, “I’m gonna just fight for every ball, and let’s see.” Sabalenka leads their head-to-head record 7-2, including a win at Roland Garros six years ago. Sabalenka secured her spot by defeating Frenchwoman Elsa Jacquemot, 7-5, 6-2.
Birrell and Walton Fall Short
Kimberly Birrell and Adam Walton, who had previously secured significant wins, experienced setbacks. Birrell was defeated by Oleksandra Oliynykova 6-3, 0-6, 7-6 (10-5). Walton was outclassed by American Zachary Svajda 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2.
Birrell, after defeating Jessica Pegula, couldn’t solve the puzzle presented by Oliynykova’s varied playing style. Despite a strong second set, Birrell ultimately fell short in the deciding tiebreak.
Birrell’s Roller-Coaster Ride
Birrell acknowledged the unpredictable nature of tennis. She said, “Tennis is quite a roller-coaster sometimes, and you can have one of the best days of your life followed by one of the tougher, tougher days.
She added, “But although today was tough, I’m still really proud of myself, the way I fought. I gotta keep my head up and keep moving forward, and remember all the good parts of this week when I’ve played some of the best tennis I’ve ever played.”
