Sakib Hussain’s recent IPL debut for Sunrisers Hyderabad is bringing newfound attention to his hometown of Gopalganj. According to Mohammed Ansari, a neighbour, the town is experiencing a surge in visitors hoping to catch a glimpse of Sakib’s house and his family.
Gopalganj’s Newfound Fame
Ansari recalls a time when Gopalganj saw few visitors, mainly relatives or politicians during elections. He says that now, people passing through the town stop by to see Sakib’s house and possibly meet his parents for a selfie.
Sakib, like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, has earned a nickname connected to his hometown – “Gopalganj ka Rabada”, a nod to South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada.
Bihar Cricket’s Resurgence
Sakib’s emergence, along with other players from Bihar, highlights the state’s cricket resurgence. The IPL has catapulted both Vaibhav and Sakib to fame, alongside Anukul Roy, Mukesh Kumar and Ishan Kishan.
Five players from Bihar in the IPL marks a significant achievement for a state cricket association that was suspended for 15 years due to malpractices and infighting.
Overcoming Obstacles
The suspension of the Bihar Cricket Association from 2003 to 2018 resulted in a lost generation of cricketers. Many players relocated to neighbouring states with better cricket administration.
Ishan Kishan, Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep and Anukul Roy all sought opportunities in other states. Despite these challenges, they inspired a new generation of cricketers back in Bihar.
During his early years, Sakib first held a cricket ball in his late teens.
Sunil Kumar notes the impact M.S. Dhoni had on Jharkhand cricket, transforming it into one of the strongest sides in domestic cricket. He hopes that Bihar has quality cricketers like Vaibhav, Sakib.
