Security Concerns Surround América de Cali’s Copa Sudamericana Match

Security has been increased for América de Cali’s Copa Sudamericana match due to concerns about potential fan behaviour.

Heightened Security Measures for América de Cali v Tigre

Concerns have arisen in Cali regarding América de Cali’s Copa Sudamericana match, given potential fan behaviour depending on the match result. Last week, fans were involved in violent acts and intimidation. These incidents targeted both players at the Cascajal headquarters and Deportivo Cali fans on Avenida Roosevelt. The incidents occurred last Friday.

Authorities have increased security for today’s match at Estadio Pascual Guerrero to prevent disturbances in the San Fernando area. Natalia Zuluaga, the sub-secretary of Security of Cali, stated that approximately 500 officers will be present for the match. Logistical support from the organising team will also be provided. Zuluaga also stated that a security assessment of the stadium was conducted with CONMEBOL and event organisers. The aim is to ensure the safety of attendees.

Official Appeals for Calm

Gerardo Mendoza, a representative from Cali, has appealed to authorities to consider warnings and threats of potential disturbances from fan groups. This follows the altercations between América and Deportivo Cali fans over the weekend, which resulted in three injuries.

Mendoza stated that fandom should be experienced peacefully. He added that football should be a celebration, not a cause of chaos, violence and anxiety. Mendoza made a special appeal to reinforce measures and anticipate situations that could disrupt public order and peaceful coexistence.

Potential Sanctions and Future Matches

The events of last Friday, involving clashes between fan groups, will be discussed at the upcoming meeting of the Local Football Commission this Thursday. The meeting will determine if sanctions will be imposed on the teams involved. A decision will also be made on whether to allow the public to attend future matches at Pascual Guerrero.

The barrismo must be lived in peace.
