Usyk to Face Verhoeven in Title Defence: WBA’s Conditions

Oleksandr Usyk is set to defend his ‘Super’ heavyweight title against Rico Verhoeven on 23 May, following permission granted by the WBA. The fight will take place at the pyramids of Giza in Egypt. Unified champion Usyk, 39, will face former Glory kickboxing world champion Verhoeven.

WBA’s Stance on the Title

The WBC had already confirmed that Usyk’s title would be on the line. The WBA has now clarified its position, stating that a Usyk victory would count as a successful title defence. However, the title itself will not be at stake for Verhoeven, as he is not currently ranked by the sanctioning body.

The WBA also stated that should Usyk lose, the championship committee would review his status and determine the next course of action regarding the heavyweight championship.

IBF’s Position and a Potential Vacant Title

The IBF has also granted permission for Usyk to fight, but his belt will not be on the line for Verhoeven either. The IBF stated that, should Usyk lose on May 23, 2026, the IBF Heavyweight title will be declared vacant immediately. If Usyk wins, the IBF will order a mandatory challenge within 180 days.

Usyk’s Rationale and Verhoeven’s Boxing Background

Usyk previously defended his decision to face Verhoeven, saying he should be able to “do what I want”, having already beaten Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois on two occasions. Usyk is yet to lose in 24 fights as a professional. He has enjoyed three spells as an undisputed champion – twice at heavyweight and once at cruiserweight. He also won Olympic gold for Ukraine at the 2012 Games in London.

Verhoeven, 37, is renowned in kickboxing but has limited boxing experience, with only one professional fight in 2014.

Verhoeven’s Ranking Opportunity

The WBA has indicated that Verhoeven could enter its heavyweight rankings if he defeats Usyk. Usyk has won 15 of his 24 fights inside the distance.

The fight has some interesting conditions attached to it.
