Fernando Alonso Sets Timeline for F1 Future Decision

Fernando Alonso anticipates making a decision about his Formula 1 future after the summer break in August. He will consider whether to extend his record-length career into a 24th season in 2027.

The two-time world champion’s contract with Aston Martin, which he joined in 2023 from Alpine, is in its final year.

Alonso Weighs Options Amid Aston Martin’s Struggles

Despite Aston Martin and engine supplier Honda’s difficult start to the new era of F1 rules this year, Alonso said recently he doesn’t feel it’s time to stop racing at the top level of motorsport just yet.

Asked about the timeline for deciding his next move at the Miami Grand Prix, Alonso stated he needs to make a decision sometime in the summer.

“At the moment I didn’t sit with myself to think about that. I never thought about it in a deep way and I need to speak with my family as well. I need to speak with my people first and decide what to do next year.

“I’m very relaxed about it. If I continue racing, I think it will be a better season than this one with the project in year two.

“If I stop racing, I know that I will race in other series.”

Commitment to Aston Martin Project

Alonso added that he is open to everything and won’t sit down with the team to make a decision until after the summer break. He wants to assess the car’s improvements and future prospects.

“I am also linked with this team, with this project. I want to succeed here behind the wheel or not being the wheel. You will see me in the paddock even if I stop racing.”

Alonso continues to outperform his team-mate, Lance Stroll, having outqualified him for 40 consecutive GPs, despite the team’s current challenges. He is optimistic that if he chooses to continue racing, his bosses will be supportive.

“You cannot be 100 per cent sure about it but I’m performing I think well enough to show the team that I can give them the results if the car is competitive,” he said.

“I’m helping the team as much as I can. I think it could be more up to me.”

Fatherhood and Future Plans

Alonso became a father in March when he and partner Melissa Jimenez welcomed their first child, a son.

The cancellation of April’s grands prix in the Middle East allowed Alonso to spend more time at home during the initial weeks of his son’s life.

When asked if becoming a father had influenced his thoughts on his racing future, Alonso acknowledged that it has changed the way he sees life. “I have some thoughts, I cannot lie. It does change the way you see life.

He added that becoming a father is going to change things.
