Premier League Set to Reject Expansion of VAR Powers

The Premier League is poised to reject the expansion of VAR powers next season. This follows discussions with the Professional Game Match Officials (PGMO), where concerns were raised about the implications of broadening VAR’s scope.

Premier League to Stick With Current VAR System

The potential expansion of VAR would have allowed it to rule on the awarding of corners. This change was approved by the International Football Association Board (Ifab) in February. Referees are set to use these extended powers at the World Cup, following a request from Fifa.

However, Ifab has made the new law discretionary, allowing leagues to decide individually whether to adopt it. The Premier League clubs will make a final decision at their annual general meeting next month. PGMO has advised against the expansion.

PGMO is concerned that using VAR to rule on corners could significantly increase match lengths. This could alienate broadcast partners and increase pressure on match officials.

Concerns Over Match Disruption

The potential for additional disruption and longer matches is also a concern for the clubs. Sources indicate that there is little appetite to overrule PGMO’s guidance. Clubs are wary of adding to VAR’s responsibilities.

FIFA’s Perspective on VAR

Fifa has taken a different view. Pierluigi Collina, chair of Fifa’s referees committee, and Gianni Infantino, the president, have expressed concerns that an incorrect corner decision could decisively influence a World Cup game, particularly in the knockout stages. The prospect of longer games is less of a concern for FIFA, with World Cup matches extended by three-minute hydration breaks in each half.

There is less chance of a single corner having a decisive influence on the outcome of the 38-match Premier League. Sunday’s decision by Chris Kavanagh to disallow Callum Wilson’s injury-time equaliser for West Ham against Arsenal in consultation with the VAR, Darren England, could affect the destination of the title and the final relegation place.

West Ham Complaint Incoming

West Ham intend to lodge a complaint against the decision to award a free-kick against Pablo for making contact with Arsenal’s goalkeeper, David Raya. There is acceptance at the club that it will not get them anywhere.

Ifab is expected to discuss the problem of grappling at corners after the World Cup. This has been particularly pronounced in the Premier League this season, but there are no proposals over how to tackle the problem at this stage.
