Los Angeles Sparks coach Lynee Roberts has been frank about why Cameron Brink is not getting more playing time. Brink struggled in limited minutes during the Sparks’ 105-78 loss to the Las Vegas Aces.
Brink’s Struggles in Season Opener
In just 12 minutes of play, Cameron Brink failed to score a point. She also committed three turnovers and three fouls.
Coach Roberts’ Expectations
Roberts stated that the team needs Brink to produce and bring defensive energy. She expressed confidence in Brink’s abilities but emphasised the need for her to perform with confidence on the court.
“I mean, we need Cam to produce. We need Cam to bring that defensive energy,” Roberts said. “We have so much confidence and belief in her. She’s got to get out on the floor with some confidence and do what she’s capable of doing. But we’re going to need her.”
Finding the Right Chemistry
Roberts acknowledged the team is still working on rotations and chemistry. She noted that the Sparks lacked floor chemistry compared to the Aces, who have played together for years. Roberts clarified that this wasn’t an excuse, but a reality.
“Part of the beginning of Season 2 is figuring out rotations and chemistry and all the things,” Roberts added. “We looked like we just didn’t have a lot of floor chemistry out there. Vegas did. They’ve also played together for years, right? And it’s not an excuse, but it’s just a reality.”
Plum Needs Support
Kelsey Plum had an impressive individual performance with 27 points. She shot 10-for-18, including 4-for-8 from beyond the arc.
For the Sparks to be successful, Plum needs help, especially in the front court. Brink is seen as a potential complement to Plum.
Roberts believes Los Angeles will need Brink moving forward. She is counting on her to meet the team’s expectations.
“So we’re going to need Cam. She’s going to be a big part of our success, have every bit of belief in her.”
