The Pirates will have a different lineup as they begin their series against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park.
Jake Mangum has been placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to May 6) due to a left hamstring strain. Nick Yorke has been recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis to take his place.
Yorke was in the starting lineup and playing first base, with Robbie Ray on the mound for San Francisco as a left-handed starter.
Mangum’s Injury Sidelines Him
Mangum was a late scratch from Thursday’s series finale in Arizona because of the hamstring issue. The injury is serious enough to warrant time on the IL.
Yorke’s Quick Return to the Majors
Yorke’s time in the Minor Leagues was brief, having been optioned postgame on May 1.
In 23 games with the big club this season, Yorke hit .221 with a .617 OPS. He also recorded three doubles, a home run, six RBIs, seven walks and six runs scored. The Pirates favour Yorke’s ability to hit left-handed pitching, although his OPS against southpaws in 2026 is .620 compared to .615 versus righties.
In three Triple-A games, Yorke had a walk, a stolen base and two runs scored.
Mangum’s Recent Performance
Mangum has a .260 average in 30 MLB games this season, along with a .621 OPS. The switch-hitter was batting .295 with two RBIs, five walks, four stolen bases and nine runs scored over his past 18 games.
Yorke’s Role with Mangum Out
With Mangum on the IL, Yorke may see more time in the outfield. He provides the Pirates with another infield option against left-handed pitching. Yorke could also contribute in late-game situations.
