Luka Doncic Injury Update: Lakers Star’s Playoff Status in Doubt

The Los Angeles Lakers are navigating the playoffs with a hampered Luka Doncic. Despite Austin Reaves’ return providing a boost, Doncic’s hamstring injury remains a concern. His absence is keenly felt as the team progresses through the post-season.

Doncic’s Slow Recovery

The outlook for Doncic’s return isn’t promising in the short term. According to Shams Charania on ESPN, the expectation is that Doncic would also miss the next series. Charania noted on April 28 that his recovery is slow. There is still no timetable for his return.

He’s starting to do more court movement. However, he is not at the point where he’s progressing in his on-court workouts as far as one-on-ones and truly pushing it on a movement front.

JJ Redick’s comments reflect a similar sentiment. He said that Doncic was able to move a little bit on the court, progressing from mostly standstill work.

Lakers Face Uphill Battle

The Lakers secured a 98-78 series win over the Rockets on May 1, with Reaves playing a part. However, the potential next series against the Oklahoma City Thunder looms large. They are young, fast, and unlikely to ease up for a shorthanded team.

Without Doncic, the Lakers face a steeper challenge. They will have no margin for error against a team already in rhythm.

Hamstring Issues Complicate Matters

Charania put it plainly: the recovery is slow. Hamstrings don’t negotiate, and a rushed return could lead to a longer absence.

Redick’s careful, measured comments suggest a cautious approach. Doncic is back on the court, technically. Moving a little more than he was a few days ago, but it’s incremental stuff.

Holding Shape Without Their Star

The Lakers are trying to keep a series alive while their best option sits in this in-between state. He is healthy enough to be seen, but not healthy enough to matter on the floor. Reaves helps bridge some of that gap, but others will have to stretch a little further than usual.

Sometimes the playoffs turn on a muscle that won’t quite.
