Alex McLeish Urges Rangers to Emulate ‘Helicopter Sunday’ Legends

Alex McLeish has told the Rangers players that they can become legends if they can salvage this season’s title bid.

Echoes of 2005: McLeish’s Message to Rangers

The former Rangers boss and his 2005 title winners became Ibrox immortals after they mounted a comeback to snatch the crown from Celtic.

McLeish is urging Danny Rohl and his players to keep the faith.

McLeish reflected on his side’s triumph, sealed with a win over Hibs as Martin O’Neill’s team crashed at Fir Park. He told Record Sport: “Going into that game at Eastern Road, we’d been written off.”

“And this Rangers team right now has been written off too. So they’ve got that challenge ahead of them, similar to what we had.”

“We just rallied as a team. We kept things very tight in the camp and had that real sense of unity.”

“We got the victories that we needed to win the championship on that famous day.”

The Current Title Challenge

Rangers are currently slumped in third, four points adrift with just four games remaining after Sunday’s defeat at home to Motherwell.

Hearts are currently leading the way.

McLeish is refusing to give up hope that Rohl’s team can pull off their own title turnaround – starting with Monday’s crucial capital clash against Derek McInnes’ Tynecastle table toppers.

Becoming Ibrox Legends

“What happened on Helicopter Sunday made legends of everyone involved.”

“Let’s hope the current boys can pull off something similar. If they can, that’s how they’ll be remembered too. Danny’s rallied the team to a great level.”

“I remember watching this Old Firm victory in a pub in Lanzarote a couple of months ago. To see that performance that day, I really felt that we had a hell of a good chance of winning the title if we could continue with that kind of impressive, fast play.”

“But the players have to really believe that they can do it.”

McLeish insisted that if they can pull off something similar to his 2005 team, the current Rangers team will be remembered as legends.
