John Wall Joins Howard University as President of Basketball Operations

John Wall, who starred for nine seasons with the Washington Wizards, is set to return to Washington, D.C.

However, this return will not be with the Wizards. Wall has reportedly joined Howard University as its president of basketball operations, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Wall’s New Role at Howard

This will be a new challenge for Wall, who has been working as a broadcaster since leaving the NBA after the 2022-23 season. While Wall does not have extensive experience as a basketball executive, he did purchase a stake in South East Melbourne — an NBL team — in 2020.

Wall boasts a history of excellence in basketball. After one year starring at Kentucky, Wall entered the NBA Draft, where the Wizards selected him with the first pick.

A Look Back at Wall’s NBA Career

During his nine seasons with the Wizards, Wall made five All-Star games. He averaged 19.0 points and 9.2 assists during that time.

Injuries began to impact Wall’s performance towards the end of his time with the Wizards. After playing in a combined 73 games over the two years prior, Wall missed the entire 2019-20 NBA season after undergoing multiple surgeries.

He was then traded to the Houston Rockets, appearing in 40 games. The following season, Wall missed the entire season as the team chose not to play him to focus on developing young players.

Wall played one more year in the NBA, appearing in 34 games with the Los Angeles Clippers during the 2022-23 season, averaging 11.4 points per game.

Howard’s Recent Basketball Success

Wall will be taking over a Howard team that is coming off a promising season. Howard went 24-11 and beat UMBC in the first four to advance to the NCAA tournament.

The team then lost in the first round to Michigan.

Despite expressing a desire to continue his NBA career in 2025, Wall eventually joined Amazon Prime Video as an analyst for the 2025-26 NBA season.
