Trail Blazers Face Spurs Amidst Wembanyama’s Injury Concerns

All eyes are on Victor Wembanyama’s health as the San Antonio Spurs prepare to face the Portland Trail Blazers in Game 3 of their first-round Western Conference series. Wembanyama suffered a concussion in Game 2, casting doubt on his participation in the upcoming match. The series is currently level at 1-1.

Wembanyama’s Concussion Protocol

Wembanyama’s availability hinges on clearing the NBA’s concussion protocol. This includes being symptom-free, getting clearance from a team physician, completing an exertion process, and receiving confirmation from the league’s director of the concussion program.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson emphasised the importance of Wembanyama’s health. “Obviously, we hope he’ll be back at some point. But we’ll allow the protocol to play out. And again, there’s nothing more important than his health.”

Impact of Wembanyama’s Presence

Wembanyama’s impact on the Spurs is considerable. His absence has a nearly 17-point difference per 100 possessions. In Game 1, Wembanyama set a franchise record for points in a playoff debut with 35 in the Spurs’ victory.

In Portland’s Game 2 victory, Wembanyama left the game with 8:57 remaining in the second quarter after hitting his head on the court.

If Wembanyama is unable to play, Luke Kornet is expected to see increased minutes at centre. In Game 2, Kornet had 10 points and nine rebounds. Harrison Barnes and Carter Bryant could also receive more playing time, and Johnson also has veterans Bismack Biyombo and Kelly Olynyk on his bench.

Trail Blazers’ Guard Play

Portland’s backcourt performance will be key to their success. Scoot Henderson delivered 31 points on 11-for-17 shooting in Game 2. Jrue Holiday generated 16 points, nine assists, five rebounds and two blocks.

Shaedon Sharpe is playing limited minutes since returning from a left fibula injury. He had nine points on five shots in 13 minutes in Game 2.

Robert Williams III’s Impact

The Trail Blazers found success with Robert Williams III on the court in Wembanyama’s absence. Williams had 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two blocks and was plus-13 in 23 minutes in Game 2. The Blazers also have more defensive versatility with Williams and Toumani Camara when Wembanyama is not in the game.

Experience on the Spurs Roster

Of San Antonio’s regular starters, De’Aaron Fox is the oldest and the only one with playoff experience before this season. He produced against Golden State in 2023, scoring 38 points twice in the seven-game series. He had at least 24 po
