Nebraska forward Quentin Rhymes intends to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. The portal window opens April 7 and runs through April 21. This marks the first offseason departure for the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Rhymes Seeks Opportunity Elsewhere
Rhymes arrived in Lincoln after signing with Nebraska over offers from New Mexico, Boise State, UNLV and UC Santa Barbara. He was viewed as an intriguing developmental prospect. The 6-foot-7 wing averaged 22.4 points per game during his post-grad season in 2023-24, shooting 41 percent from three-point range.
That production did not translate to immediate opportunities at the college level. Rhymes’ only on-court action during the season came in an exhibition win over Midland. He logged just under seven minutes off the bench, finishing with two points, one rebound and a block.
Nebraska head coach Fred Hoiberg noted Rhymes’ progress behind the scenes. “I’ll say this: Quentin has really improved since we’ve gotten him,” Hoiberg said last summer. “He may be as athletic as anybody on our team. … He has really bought into the film sessions and is trying to do everything he can to learn the system.”
Departure Follows Tournament Run
Rhymes’ departure comes after Nebraska’s NCAA Tournament run came to an end in the Sweet Sixteen, falling to Iowa. That game included a late-game miscommunication. The Cornhuskers briefly took the floor with only four players.
Iowa capitalised on the moment and pulled away late, ending Nebraska’s postseason run.
Rhymes’ Potential
Rhymes enters the portal as a player with clear upside but a limited collegiate résumé. He represents an intriguing option for programmes in need of athletic wings with scoring potential.
- Rhymes averaged 22.4 points per game in his post-grad season.
- He shot 41 percent from three-point range.
- His only action this season came in an exhibition game against Midland.
The move offers Rhymes a chance to reset. He seeks to find a larger role and begin turning that potential into production at the college level. Rhymes is betting his next stop will give him the opportunity to prove he’s ready.
Rhymes will not be required to commit to a new programme by the closing date. This allows him time to evaluate the best fit moving forward.
