Zverev Too Strong for Blockx at Madrid Open 2026

Alexander Blockx, following his semi-final defeat to Alexander Zverev at the Mutua Madrid Open 2026, assessed his performance and the challenges Zverev presented.

Blockx Reflects on Zverev Defeat

Blockx acknowledged Zverev’s comprehensive game. He noted Zverev’s strong serve and return, which put him under pressure from the beginning. “He has a very complete game. He serves very well, returns very well… I felt a lot of pressure from the beginning of the match and yes, I think he deserves to be in the final,” Blockx said.

Blockx felt Zverev had a response to everything he tried. “In the rally I tried a bit of everything: Be aggressive, open the court… but I felt that he had an answer for everything.”

Areas for Improvement

Blockx identified areas where he needs to improve. “I need to improve everything I do now to have a chance next time,” he stated.

Blockx’s Madrid Open Run

The Mutua Madrid Open 2026 marked Blockx’s best tournament. He reached his first Masters 1000 semi-final. His performance is expected to elevate him to number 35 in the ATP rankings.

Blockx conceded Zverev was the better player on the day. “Today he simply played better, and that’s all I can say. I tried to keep my serve, as in the last few matches,” he said.

Blockx added that Zverev deserved to be in the final.
