WTA Finals Seek New Host After Riyadh Exit: Charlotte in Contention

The WTA is seeking a new host for the WTA Finals after deciding to leave Riyadh. The decision to depart the Saudi Arabian market comes after considerable debate. The original agreement with Riyadh was for three years.

Charlotte Emerges as a Potential Host

Charlotte is a leading candidate in North America to host the WTA Finals in 2027 and beyond. The city has not hosted any official tour events since the 1970s. However, Charlotte has been mentioned more frequently in recent years.

Charlotte was the intended destination when new tournament owner Ben Navarro threatened to move the Cincinnati Open out of Ohio in 2023. The Charlotte Sports Foundation has also organised the Charlotte Invitational exhibition event each of the last two offseasons.

WTA’s Stance on Riyadh

WTA CEO Portia Archer indicated interest last year in extending the WTA’s stay in Riyadh beyond the original three-year deal. Despite this, talks between the WTA and the Saudi Tennis Federation did not lead to a renewal. This year will be the final edition in Riyadh.

The WTA is “looking for a new host for its signature year-end championships event, the WTA Finals”.
