World Seniors Snooker Championship Hit by Crucible Criticism

The World Seniors Snooker Championship, intended as the most prestigious event for players over 40, has been hit by criticism. This year’s edition was anticipated due to Ronnie O’Sullivan’s debut appearance, but it descended into farce.

Gilbert’s Crucible Criticism and White’s Response

The tournament started with disagreement over the venue. Dave Gilbert voiced his unhappiness with the event being held at the Crucible Theatre, which has been the location since 2019. Gilbert said that only those who qualify or are top 16 professionals should play at the Crucible, not those “hacking around in exhibitions”.

Jimmy White responded to Gilbert’s comments by telling him to “get a life”.

Format Changes and Table Troubles

Organisers were criticised for scrapping deciding frames and replacing them with a black-ball finish. The tables themselves also caused problems. Viewers criticised the white edge around the tables. During Matthew Stevens’ match with Dominic Dale, the balls were bouncing as they neared the black spot.

The white almost leapt off the table. Play was suspended after discussions involving the players, the referee, and tournament officials. Closer inspection revealed a cracked slate beneath the cloth.

John Parrott said the slate was gone underneath and raised. He added that the balls were jumping in the air. Parrott stated that you could not play on it.

The World Seniors Snooker Tour announced that there would be no further play on Table Two that evening due to a fault. Matthew Stevens and Dominic Dale would conclude their match on Table One following another match.

Burden’s Title Defence Moved Backstage

Alfie Burden and Igor Figueiredo played in a private area of the practice room. Burden was the reigning champion, having won the title last year. Instead of starting his title defence at the Crucible, he played on a practice table backstage.

Figueiredo won the match.
