World Baseball Classic: USA Survive, Dominican Republic Shine

The 2026 World Baseball Classic is headed to the quarterfinals after a thrilling opening round.

Team USA, who were pre-tournament favourites, were almost eliminated after losing to Italy. Italy’s victory over Mexico allowed the U.S. to move on, eliminating Mexico in the process.

Canada also caused a surprise, going 3-1 and defeating Puerto Rico to win Pool A.

Dominican Republic’s Celebratory Style

The Dominican Republic have hit a tournament-high 13 home runs. Junior Caminero, Oneil Cruz, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Juan Soto and Fernando Tatis Jr. have all hit a couple.

The players are celebrating with bat flips and gestures, taking their time rounding the bases. Manager Albert Pujols believes this team has the best energy he has been around in all his years in the big leagues.

The Dominican Republic’s next opponent is Korea.

USA’s Near Miss and Path Forward

Team USA know they can hit as well as any team. Logan Webb, Paul Skenes and Nolan McLean are lined up as starters.

To beat Canada, and potentially the D.R. and Japan, the United States will need the best of manager Mark DeRosa.

Their next opponent is Canada.

Japan’s Undefeated Run

Japan went 4-0 in pool play. Their victories included an 8-6 win against Korea, and they also trailed Australia through six innings in another match.

Japan’s next opponent is Venezuela.

The event now moves forward to the elimination rounds.
