Liverpool’s Arne Slot won’t be pleased after watching his side lose 2-1 to Wolves. A late goal saw Wolves take all three points at Molineux. The Liverpool boss had earlier stated he found most Premier League games no longer a joy to watch.
Wolves’ Late Winner Deepens Liverpool’s Concerns
Andre’s 94th-minute winner for Wolves sparked wild celebrations. Liverpool’s away end was seen emptying before the final whistle. Just when it seemed Liverpool were making progress, they suffered another defeat.
Slot attempted to defend his side by highlighting Wolves’ good form. “How do I sum this up? Same old story,” said Slot after the game. He added, “My expectations have changed throughout the season because I expected more from us and what we are fighting for now. But it’s another setback and we didn’t help ourselves with this result, not at all.”
Slot acknowledged the concern of dropping points against teams in these positions. He noted that Aston Villa and Arsenal had also dropped points at Molineux.
Liverpool’s Champions League Hopes in the Balance
Liverpool have nine league games left, and missing out on next season’s Champions League is a genuine concern. Slot will know his side simply cannot afford to miss out. Liverpool failed to create enough and were punished defensively, conceding an injury-time winner.
Captain Virgil van Dijk said the team’s performance was not good enough. “It was slow, we were predictable, sloppy in possession and wrong decision-making,” he said. “We didn’t concede chances but if you perform like that, then a result like this can be a result of that and that’s a fact. It was disappointing.”
Wolves’ Dramatic Turnaround at Molineux
Wolves have now won their past two Premier League games. Before this, they had managed just one victory in 32. Molineux has seen as many Premier League wins in the past five days as it had in the previous 10 months.
Wolves head coach Edwards said, “This is Liverpool Football Club – never mind this position you’re in, any time you beat them, you’ve got to enjoy the moment.” He added, “They’re an amazing football club with an amazing manager and loads of great players. So it was a big, big night for us.”
Liverpool have lost five Premier League games thanks to injury-time goals. This is the most ever by any team in a single campaign.
Edwards joked after the game.
