Wolves Fans Urge Club to Keep Angel Gomes After Liverpool Win

Wolverhampton Wanderers supporters are making it clear: Angel Gomes should remain at Molineux next season.

The England international joined Wolves in the winter window on loan from Marseille. The Old Gold club has an option to buy the 25-year-old attacking midfielder this summer.

Gomes’ Move to Wolves Raised Eyebrows

Gomes’ move to Wolves in the winter window raised eyebrows, after he was highly sought after in recent years in the Premier League before his move to Marseille.

That transfer to Marseille clearly didn’t work out, resulting in the deadline day transfer to Wolves.

So far, Gomes hasn’t set the world alight at Molineux and is yet to pick up a single goal contribution in his six appearances. His lack of output saw him dropped from the starting XI until he was brought back into the lineup for the 2-1 victory over Liverpool on Tuesday.

Fans Believe Gomes’ Stay Should Be Permanent

Reflecting on his performance against Liverpool, Wolves fans believe that his stay should become permanent.

Some fans have claimed that he is “lightweight”, while others have said:

  • “Struggling but he’ll get there. Gonna be essential next season me thinks if we keep him”
  • “Clear quality on the ball I just think he needs to adjust physically and get more minutes too, still think he’d be arguably the best midfielder in the Champ if we could convince him to stay”
  • “Good player, need to convince him his future’s here & to stay next season”

More fan comments included:

  • “Good footballer but a little lightweight. Hopefully we can keep him here for next season. Would be really effective in the champ I feel”
  • “Great footballer just a little lightweight I think but can’t expect him him to be mad when he’s only little”
  • “Bit early to say but has good vision for a great pass but could be too lightweight for the EPL, or indeed the Championship, if he stays!”
  • “Very tidy. Will be best player in Championship if he stays.”

Gomes’ Stats in the Premier League

According to Fotmob on 4 March, Gomes’ stats in the Premier League this season have been solid. He is averaging 0.75 successful dribbles, 70 per cent duel won, 50 per cent successful crosses, 2.61 tackles per 90 minutes.

Gomes is also yet to be dispossessed, with his possession of the ball being an obvious highlight.

However, his attacking stats leave much to be desired, with the midfielder only producing a 0.02 xG, 0.75 shots and 1.12 chances on average each game.

As a result, this is going to have to dramatically improve if Gomes is to have any impact in the Championship next season.

The 25-year-old will be hoping to get his career back on track, and a spell in the second-tier could be the solution to this problem. However, it remains to be seen if Wolves want to make his stay a permanent one in the summer.
