The White Sox returned to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over the Twins, fuelled by a pair of home runs at Rate Field. Munetaka Murakami’s AL-leading blast and Drew Romo’s two-run shot propelled the White Sox to a win, pushing their record above .500.
Murakami’s Home Run Breaks Drought
Murakami’s 18th home run of the season came in the first inning off a 97.5 mph fastball from Twins starter Zebby Matthews. The home run tied the game after Brooks Lee had given Minnesota an early lead. The ball travelled a Statcast-projected 375 feet.
The home run ended a seven-game drought for the Japanese rookie. His previous long ball came on May 16 against the Cubs.
White Sox manager Will Venable expressed his satisfaction with Murakami’s performance. He said Murakami continues to take really good swings and make good swing decisions.
Romo Extends the Lead
Drew Romo followed up Murakami’s homer with a two-run shot of his own in the next inning. It was Romo’s fifth of the season and gave the White Sox a lead they would not relinquish.
Romo credited the hitters and coaches for their preparation. He stated he had a great plan of attack and was ready for the first pitch.
Japanese Duo Make History
Murakami was also part of a historical moment alongside teammate Rikuu Nishida. The White Sox became the third team in MLB history to field two Japanese-born position players in the same starting lineup. They joined the Phillies (2008) and Mariners (2012).
Nishida, making his MLB debut, recorded his first Major League hit in the fourth inning with a single to center field.
Romo expressed his excitement about the team’s performance and potential. He said he hasn’t been on a team this good in a long time. He added that seeing how talented they are and seeing them perform day in and day out, winning ballgames, fires him up.
