Jordan Walker Confirmed as Fifth Participant for 2026 Home Run Derby

St. Louis Cardinals slugger Jordan Walker is set to swing for the fences, having accepted MLB’s invitation to participate in the T-Mobile Home Run Derby. The 24-year-old’s participation marks a significant moment, as he heads to the All-Star Game amid his long-awaited breakout season. Walker becomes the fifth member of the 2026 Home Run Derby field, with the event scheduled for July 13.

Walker Joins Elite Field for Philadelphia Showdown

The 2026 T-Mobile Home Run Derby will take place on Monday at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Coverage of the showpiece event is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. ET, airing live at 8 p.m. ET on Netflix. Walker joins a competitive field of announced participants for this year’s Derby.

Rays third baseman Junior Caminero, Yankees first baseman Ben Rice, Royals outfielder Jac Caglianone, and Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras are the other hitters confirmed to be in the Derby field. Walker’s inclusion marks the first time a Cardinals hitter has participated in the Home Run Derby since Albert Pujols in 2022. No Cardinal has ever managed to win the Derby, with Pujols coming closest to the title as runner-up to Garret Anderson in 2003.

A Remarkable Turnaround for the Cardinals Slugger

A spot in the Derby is the latest honour for Walker, whose impressive star turn for the resurgent Cardinals has been one of baseball’s feel-good stories of the season. He initially broke into the Majors as a 20-year-old in 2023, debuting as one of baseball’s top-ranked prospects. His rookie season appeared to set him on a path to becoming a franchise cornerstone, as he registered 16 home runs and posted a .787 OPS.

However, the subsequent two seasons proved far more challenging for Walker. In a two-year span covering 2024 and 2025, his .595 OPS stood as one of the lowest across Major League Baseball. His power output saw a significant decline during this period, as he managed just 11 home runs over 574 plate appearances. These struggles also led to him losing playing time in right field, grappling with his mechanics, and ultimately, a demotion to Triple-A Memphis.

This year, however, has presented a completely different narrative for the talented hitter. Walker re-worked his body during the offseason. Following initial struggles through the first slate of Spring Training games, he made the decision to re-work his swing, too. It was his own idea to take a break from game action and dedicate more time at the team’s hitting lab. That strategic decision has certainly paid dividends.

Power Metrics Point to Derby Readiness

Through 89 games this season, Walker is slashing .294/.355/.534, complemented by 21 home runs, 70 RBIs, and an .889 OPS. The new Walker, featuring a revamped swing specifically designed to lift the ball in the air, appears tailor-made for the Home Run Derby format. Entering play on Thursday, only nine hitters across the Majors had recorded more long balls than Walker, and only 12 had achieved a higher slugging percentage.

The power now comes with apparent ease for Walker, who swings one of Major League Baseball’s fastest bats. He boasts a 79.1 mph average bat speed and an 85.7% fast-swing rate. Junior Caminero is the only qualified hitter to exhibit better metrics in either of these categories. As a direct result of these improvements, Walker consistently hits the ball with incredible force. His 94.2 mph average exit velocity is currently tied for the fifth highest among all qualified hitters.

Walker’s participation ensures that fans will have another compelling reason to tune into the 2026 T-Mobile Home Run Derby on Netflix, as the Cardinals slugger looks to make history for his club.
