Viktor Gyokeres’ Excuse Slammed After Arsenal’s Loss to Bournemouth

Arsenal suffered a 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth, leading to criticism of Viktor Gyokeres’ excuse for their performance. Danny Murphy has responded to Gyokeres’ comments about the pitch, suggesting Arsenal’s problems ran deeper than surface conditions.

Gyokeres’ Pitch Excuse Dismissed

Viktor Gyokeres blamed a dry pitch for his side’s lack of fluency against Bournemouth. However, Danny Murphy dismissed this excuse as laughable. Murphy stated on Match of the Day that even if the pitch was dry, he didn’t think they played enough long balls.

Murphy highlighted Bournemouth’s high press and man-for-man marking at the back. He suggested that Arsenal’s international players, like Martinelli and Madueke, should have made different decisions, such as playing percentage balls and trying to spin their opponents around.

Arsenal’s Performance and Title Race Impact

A Gyokeres penalty had cancelled out Eli Junior Kroupi’s early goal for Bournemouth. Alex Scott then scored the winning goal for Bournemouth on 74 minutes. The Gunners have now lost their third match in four matches in all competitions.

Arsenal remain nine points ahead of Manchester City, who play Chelsea on Sunday. Manchester City have two games in hand and face the Gunners at the Etihad Stadium on April 19.

Arteta’s Reaction to the Defeat

Arsenal boss Arteta described the defeat as “a big punch in the face, and extremely disappointing.” He admitted that there were some very basic things that the team did extremely badly. Arteta added, “When you do that, they’re going to capitalise, and it becomes very chaotic and very difficult to control.”

Arteta acknowledged the need for self-reflection and acknowledged the painful feeling of the loss. He stated that if someone had told him in August that they would be in this position in April, he would have taken it.

Missing Players and Team Strength

Arteta addressed the absence of Bukayo Saka, Jurrien Timber, Martin Odegaard and Riccardo Calafiori. He said that while they can’t control injuries, they can control their performances. Arteta stressed the importance of having everyone fit and available and stated that the missing players are big, important players who are needed immediately to strengthen the team.

Arteta concluded by saying that those who were involved need to stand up and that he, as manager, needs to be among them.

He added that anything said after a defeat at home has to be accepted and that there are no excuses.
