Venus Williams’ Wildcard Row Erupts After Miami Open Loss

The debate around Venus Williams receiving wildcards has reignited, with former world No.1 Yevgeny Kafelnikov calling for a halt to the practice. This comes after Williams’ recent first-round defeat at Indian Wells.

Kafelnikov’s Criticism of Wildcard Invitations

Kafelnikov believes Williams should no longer receive invitations to compete in events, suggesting these should be reserved for emerging talents. Kafelnikov referenced Dmitry Tursunov’s comments made after Williams’ defeat at Indian Wells: “After another Venus Williams defeat, he said, I have incredible respect for Venus Williams’ achievements. Multiple Grand Slam singles champion, world number one, but it’s time.

Kafelnikov said, “The wildcard into the main draw would be useful for many girls. The same way Maria Sharapova received one in her time. This wildcard could have been used more productively, and I, in principle, completely agree with him.”

Williams, currently ranked No.145 in the world, has struggled to find form, losing her last eight matches. Her last victory was in July 2025, against Peyton Stearns in the Washington Open Round of 32.

Williams’ Perspective on Her Form

Prior to the Australian Open in January, Williams addressed her form and losing streak, stating: “I’m hitting the ball really well. I can’t expect perfection right now, but I know I’m playing good tennis.

“Winning and losing doesn’t know any age. Once you walk on court, you’re there to compete. It’s a beautiful sport. I love what I do, and it’s a blessing and an honour to still be playing.”

Williams participated in the Melbourne tournament but lost 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 against Olga Danilovic after failing to compete in the previous four.

Miami Open and Raducanu’s Absence

Williams is scheduled to compete against Francesca Jones in the Miami Open Round of 128 on Wednesday. The last time Williams won a WTA singles tournament was at the Kaohsiung Open in Taiwan in February 2016.

In contrast to Williams’ participation, Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from the Miami Open. The British No.1 is focusing on recovering from illness. She became unwell while competing in the Middle East last month and is still experiencing post-viral symptoms.

Williams is set to compete in Miami, hoping to improve her recent form and address the ongoing debate surrounding her wildcard entries into tournaments.
