Venus Williams is back at Indian Wells, continuing an active spell of tournament appearances.
The former world number one has participated in events in Auckland, Hobart, Melbourne, Austin, and now Indian Wells this year. This follows a summer where she competed in three hard-court events in the United States.
Williams Faces Parry in Opening Match
Williams, currently holding a 1-7 record since last summer, is scheduled to play 111th-ranked Diane Parry. Their match is set for Thursday. Williams has stated she is training hard and remains enthusiastic about her tennis future. She feels she is setting herself up to win points and control the play, but needs match wins.
“I’m getting so many things right, but, you know, there had been a lack of playing matches,” she said in Australia. “So I’m playing well. I’m setting myself up each point to win points and controlling the points.”
Despite her recent record, three of her losses have been in three sets, including one against Karolina Muchova.
Matchup Against a Younger Opponent
Williams will face a significant age gap against Parry, who is half her age. Parry has already qualified for the main draw with two wins. Despite being 5’7″, Parry possesses good hands, timing, and a versatile one-handed backhand.
Inconsistent Form and Crowd Support
Williams’ form can vary significantly during matches. It’s possible the Indian Wells crowd could help her maintain a high level of play consistently enough to secure a win. The crowd may favour Williams in this match.
Townsend’s Momentum Amidst Fatigue
Taylor Townsend is also competing at Indian Wells. She arrives after a busy week in Austin, where she played nine matches, reaching the singles final and winning the doubles title. Townsend then qualified for the main draw at Indian Wells with two more singles matches.
Her next opponent is Bouzkova, who is ranked higher than anyone Townsend faced in Austin. Bouzkova holds a 2-0 record against Townsend and is currently ranked 33rd compared to Townsend’s 87th. While Bouzkova is considered more consistent, Townsend’s variety of shots can be decisive when she is performing well.
Townsend may be experiencing fatigue. Like Williams, Townsend is expected to have crowd support.
Zheng looked like he was about to become a big story at the Australian Open. The 22-year-old Columbia senior won three qualifying matches before stunning Sebastian Korda in five sets in the first round.
Whether Venus Williams can capitalise on the crowd support and her experience to overcome Parry remains to be seen.
