As the Indian Premier League (IPL) returns, attention will be on the big names, but also on a teenager: Vaibhav Suryavanshi. A day before the IPL starts, Rajasthan Royals batter Suryavanshi turns 15. This sharpens the question of whether he is ready for the big stage.
Suryavanshi first gained attention three years ago as a 12-year-old. Since then, his batting quality, consistency, and hunger for tall scores at a high strike rate have become central.
An Aggressive Talent
Suryavanshi is an instinctive aggressor. He attacks the ball, and at his best, his strokeplay is reminiscent of Garry Sobers.
In 2020, the International Cricket Council (ICC) introduced minimum age rules to safeguard players. No-one below 15 could step onto the international stage, even at the Under-19 level. Pakistan’s Hasan Raza holds the record for being the youngest male Test cricketer at 14 years and 227 days.
Sachin Tendulkar’s benchmark of an international debut at 16 years and 205 days is no longer out of reach for Suryavanshi.
Fast-Tracked After Chance Encounter
Suryavanshi’s fast-tracking in 2023 was due to chance and talent. Selector Thilak Naidu was assigned to watch a Vinoo Mankad Trophy game in Chandigarh, but it was washed out. Naidu then went to another match where Suryavanshi struck 86 off 76 balls for Bihar against Assam.
Naidu was convinced of Suryavanshi’s ability and fast-tracked him after speaking with VVS Laxman. Suryavanshi found his rhythm at every step.
- He piled on runs in the Under-19 Challenger Trophy in November 2023.
- He carried that form into a quadrangular series later that month, representing India Under-19 against England and Bangladesh.
It would be a surprise if India’s selectors waited long to pick him. Plenty of young talents have been fast-tracked since Tendulkar, but few have carried this kind of inevitability so early. Suryavanshi doesn’t just look promising – he looks preordained for India colours.
