Usyk to Face Kickboxer Verhoeven in Controversial Title Defence

Oleksandr Usyk is set to defend his unified world title against Rico Verhoeven on 23 May in Egypt, a decision that has raised eyebrows across the boxing world. Usyk, a two-weight undisputed champion, stated he should be allowed to ‘do what I want to do’ regarding his choice of opponent. The announcement was made at a news conference, which also included Usyk predicting that Anthony Joshua would be the next undisputed heavyweight champion.

Verhoeven’s Unconventional Path to Boxing

Verhoeven, 37, has only boxed professionally once, back in 2014. In contrast, the 39-year-old Usyk boasts a decorated career, including an Olympic gold medal, undisputed cruiserweight champion status, and two-time undisputed heavyweight champion. Usyk remains unbeaten in 24 professional bouts. Before transitioning from kickboxing in November, Verhoeven won 66 of his 76 fights. His sole boxing match resulted in a stoppage victory against an opponent with no prior wins.

Usyk’s Reasoning and Future Plans

Usyk framed the bout as a personal challenge. “For me it’s a challenge. Rico is a great guy, a dangerous guy,” Usyk said. “One time I want to do what I want, not what I need. A lot of time I do what other people need. You have to box this person, or this or this. I say okay. Now I do what I want.”

Usyk has indicated future plans to face the winner of Fabio Wardley v Daniel Dubois, followed by a potential trilogy fight with Tyson Fury. He also mentioned he would step aside if Fury and Anthony Joshua were able to agree a deal.

Verhoeven’s Confidence Despite Criticism

Verhoeven addressed the weight difference between himself and Usyk. “There is a 20 kilo weight difference. He’s a built-up cruiserweight,” Verhoeven stated. “I’m a natural heavyweight. That’s the difference. That’s what will happen when I land my best shot clean. And if not, we’re going to win.”

Adding to the unusual circumstances surrounding the fight, Verhoeven revealed that actor Jason Statham played a role in securing the opportunity with Saudi organisers. Promoter Eddie Hearn, despite having no connection to either fighter, intervened to break up a tense face-off between Usyk and Verhoeven at the press conference.

A Contentious WBC Title Defence

The contest has been widely criticised, particularly the decision to put the WBC world title on the line. At the news conference, Usyk joked about his success. “Hard training and good pasta – double portion,” he said.

  • Usyk is the unified world champion and two-time undisputed heavyweight champion.
  • Verhoeven has only one professional boxing fight to his name.
  • The fight is scheduled for 23 May in Egypt.

The fight is viewed by many as a mismatch.
