UCLA’s football programme appears to be waking up from a decade-long recruiting slump. New coach Bob Chesney has orchestrated a run of commitments not seen since Jim Mora Jr.’s time.
The Bruins recently secured pledges from five highly-rated prospects. Three are ranked among the top 100 nationally, according to the 247Sports Composite.
It’s only May, but Chesney’s first recruiting class is currently among the top five in the nation.
Bruins Aiming to Reclaim Recruiting Dominance
UCLA’s recent recruiting success has surprised many. However, the programme has a history of strong recruiting classes.
From 2010 to 2018, the Bruins had eight top-20 classes. In contrast, the 2020s have seen them ranked no higher than No. 33.
UCLA offers a strong academic environment and plays in a top conference. It also benefits from a rich local talent pool.
Chesney addressed the team’s current standing, stating it’s his job to improve it.
Chesney’s Energy Sparks Optimism
Chesney’s energy is a recurring theme when people discuss UCLA football.
Scott Altenberg, head coach at Serra High School and a UCLA alum, sees similarities with Pete Carroll. He noted Carroll’s active presence and constant energy.
Altenberg recalled Chesney’s visit to Serra, noting his clear vision and energy. He believes this represents a positive shift for UCLA.
Under Chip Kelly, UCLA had alienated many high schools in Southern California. They were often late in offering scholarships to local recruits.
Rebuilding Through Talent Acquisition
College football is driven by its players. UCLA is starting to show signs of improvement in talent acquisition, led by Chesney.
“The one thing that’s not up to par at this moment is this football team,” Chesney told reporters on Saturday, “and it’s my job to make sure we get that back.”
With Chesney at the helm, UCLA aims to restore its football programme to its former glory through strategic recruiting and a revitalised approach.
