Tuchel Warns Cole Palmer Over England World Cup Spot

Cole Palmer’s place in England’s World Cup squad is far from assured, according to Thomas Tuchel.

Tuchel suggested Palmer must demonstrate his worth to secure his spot.

Palmer’s Limited England Appearances

Injuries have hampered Palmer’s England career during Tuchel’s time as head coach. Since Tuchel took over on New Year’s Day 2025, Palmer has only played once for England, featuring for 65 minutes against Andorra.

Tough Competition for No. 10 Role

Palmer faces a significant challenge to be included in the final 26-man World Cup squad, due to a stop-start season for Chelsea. He is competing for the No10 role against players such as Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, Phil Foden and Eberechi Eze.

Tuchel has identified the No10 position as England’s most competitive.

The 23-year-old Palmer, who has 12 England appearances including the Euro 2024 final, needs to impress in games against Uruguay and Japan this week.

Tuchel’s Challenge to Palmer

Tuchel stated that Palmer needs to prove himself. He said there is more evidence without Palmer than with him, putting the pressure on the player.

Tuchel acknowledged Palmer’s difficult season, compounded by a tough spell with the national team. Tuchel said that Palmer was only available once, and the team decided to stick with the same squad. Tuchel also highlighted the significant competition for Palmer’s best position, the No10 role.

Despite the challenges, Tuchel is seeing positive signs. He said Palmer is trying hard, is in good spirits, open, communicating, and showing his quality. Tuchel also noted that Palmer is engaged in the group and that he will get his chances during the next matches.

Improved Physical Condition

Palmer’s injuries have negatively impacted his club form over the past two seasons. However, Tuchel is optimistic about Palmer’s current physical condition, citing good data recently.

Tuchel saw Palmer play live against Arsenal and felt his stride was back to its original length for the first time in a while. Before, Tuchel felt Palmer was not free, his stride was not long enough, his acceleration was lacking and his movement was restricted.

Tuchel received feedback from Palmer and Chelsea that he felt much better during the Arsenal game. He also had a very strong game against Aston Villa with a huge physical output.

Tuchel added that Palmer is back to full confidence and they see it in training. He stated that Palmer is not pulling out or holding back, which is what they wanted.

Tuchel concluded that Palmer needs to understand he is fighting for his place and cannot hold back, with four training sessions ahead for him to show up.
