Trey Hendrickson is set to become a free agent after the Cincinnati Bengals opted not to use the franchise tag. The Bengals’ decision provides the team with financial flexibility heading into free agency. Hendrickson, meanwhile, will have the opportunity to select his next team.
Why the Bengals Let Hendrickson Walk
Applying the franchise tag to Hendrickson would have cost the Bengals $30.2 million in cap space. This is a significant figure for a team needing to address multiple areas in free agency, particularly on the defensive side.
Hendrickson’s Potential Landing Spots
Several teams could be in the running to sign Hendrickson. The Colts, 49ers, Patriots and Titans are all potential destinations.
The Colts could be a good fit, reuniting Hendrickson with former Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, who now holds the same position with Indianapolis. Hendrickson enjoyed a productive spell under Anarumo in Cincinnati, recording at least 14 sacks in three of four seasons, including 17.5 in both 2023 and 2024.
The 49ers are in need of pass-rushing help after finishing with the NFL’s fewest sacks last year (20). The Patriots, who were active in free agency last offseason and have cap space available, could also be a contender. Mike Vrabel will be looking for pass-rush upgrades, after the Patriots posted the league’s worst sack differential last year, allowing 48 while recording 35.
The Titans have the most cap space in the league. If Hendrickson is prioritising the highest possible salary, Tennessee could be an option. Robert Saleh is a defensive coach, so he’ll certainly be looking for some game wreckers on that side of the ball.
Concerns Over Age and Injury
Pete Prisco has issued a warning to teams considering signing Hendrickson. According to Prisco, injury and age are potential concerns. Hendrickson missed time last year and is 31 years old.
Despite these concerns, Prisco anticipates significant interest in Hendrickson. He expects the 2024 sack leader to command a strong market. Prisco believes caution will be exercised regarding the contract, with teams unlikely to offer a ‘megadeal’ due to his age.
- Hendrickson is 31 years old.
- He missed 10 games last season.
- He was the 2024 sack leader.
Despite missing 10 games last season, Prisco still expects the 2024 sack leader to garner significant interest.
Many teams are in need of pass-rushers. According to Prisco, teams that can rush the passer often find success, citing the Eagles and Seahawks as examples.
Prisco expects there will be caution involved with the contract, as you can’t give him a megadeal because of the age, but he’s going to get some kind of deal.
