Tottenham Hotspur are facing a period of significant change after a challenging season. Chief executive Vinai Venkatesham has described the need for a ‘complete reset’ at the club. This follows a season where the club battled relegation.
Venkatesham’s Assessment: A ‘Complete Reset’ Needed
Vinai Venkatesham joined Tottenham in the summer of 2025 and was initially optimistic. He believed a realistic target would be competing for European places. However, his outlook changed after gaining a deeper understanding of the club’s internal state.
Venkatesham stated that the club was in a ‘significantly worse state in some places than I thought’. He clarified that this wasn’t a criticism but an observation. He said that it was very clear that this wasn’t some form of turnaround that was required of the club in quite a few areas. It was really a complete reset.
Speaking after a final-day victory over Everton, Venkatesham discussed the emotional strains of a relegation battle that went to the season’s closing minutes. He noted it was a huge outpouring of relief, but relief is ‘nowhere near the standard of the football club’.
Owners Pledge Investment and Rebuild
Tottenham’s owners, the Lewis family, have acknowledged the need for change. They published a statement promising to ‘rebuild’ and ‘recapture the spirit’ of the club. The owners recognised that a repeat of this season ‘must never happen again’.
The Lewis family committed to investing in the teams, the academy, and backroom functions. They stated they are ‘not selling the club’ and are ‘all in’. They pledged that fans will see more investment in the coming months.

Venkatesham Reflects on Initial Expectations
Venkatesham started his job on 1 June last year with high hopes. Even though Tottenham had just finished 17th under Ange Postecoglou, they had won the Europa League, their first trophy since 2008, while the squad was packed with seasoned internationals.
Venkatesham praised the supporters for helping the team ‘over the line’ in their relegation battle. He understands that more than words will be needed to appease fans who have been critical.
The change required is deep. It will take time and commitment, but change is happening.
