2005 Topps Baseball Cards: Top Rookie Cards for Collectors

If you’re building a card collection around MLB players from the mid-2000s, it’s worth taking a serious look at some 2005 Topps rookie baseball cards.

Topps’ releases from this year packed in some great cards for young players that many of us who were young baseball fans still think of fondly all these years later.

David Wright’s Dual Rookie Card

David Wright’s dual rookie card, Series 1 #330, is one of the most recognisable third base cards of the era. PSA 10 copies have been selling in the $30 range.

This dual RC with Craig Brazell is a classic example of the era’s “Future Stars” framing. Brazell, a fifth-round pick in the 1998 MLB draft and a top-10 organisational prospect in 2003, didn’t live up to the hype, racking up a total of just 38 big-league plate appearances.

Wright more than lived up to the hype during his 14-year run in Flushing with the Mets. He produced a .296/.376/.491 line with 242 home runs, 970 RBI, 949 runs scored, and 196 steals.

The right-handed hitter posted a 30-30 season in 2007, and his 1,777 career hits are at the top of the franchise leaderboard.

Injuries derailed what could’ve been a Hall of Fame career for the seven-time All-Star. Even before Wright officially walked away from the game, he had already cemented himself as one of the best position players in franchise history.

His legacy within Mets history was already secured before he played his last game in September 2018, but it was set in stone in 2025 when the team inducted him into the Mets Hall of Fame while also retiring his number 5.

Verlander and Howard’s Rookie Cards

Justin Verlander’s flagship rookie card, Series 2 #677, has been trending upward lately. After PSA 10 copies had typically been around the $200 mark, more recent sales have pushed toward $250.

Ryan Howard’s dual RC, Series 2 #689, is a top card for Phillies fans, especially since he’s paired with another impactful Phillie in Hamels. PSA 10 copies have been selling between $30 and $50.

Gonzalez and McCutchen: Sleeper Picks

Carlos Gonzalez, Updates and Highlights UH298, is a sleeper pick that doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Raw copies can often be grabbed for just a few dollars, and graded copies are available for not much more on eBay.

Gonzalez doesn’t always get the spotlight he deserves in rookie card conversations, but his 2005 Topps

You can grab a PSA 10 of Andrew McCutchen’s rookie, Updates and Highlights UH329, for somewhere in the vicinity of $100.
