Tomljanovic Suffers Defeat to McNally at Roland-Garros

Ajla Tomljanovic is keen to leave the clay of France behind for the grass of England after an early exit at Roland-Garros.

The Australian lost to American Caty McNally in the first round, with the score 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3.

Tomljanovic, formerly ranked world No.32, has dropped to 100th and has been dealing with plantar fasciitis in her feet.

Tomljanovic Reflects on a Difficult Period

“I’m just looking forward to putting this horrific six weeks behind me,” Tomljanovic told reporters in Paris.

“I think it’s probably the worst stretch I’ve had in my career, which feels odd. I don’t think I’ve ever really lost this many matches in a row, so that honestly feels a bit new at this stage of my career.”

Duckworth Advances as Tomljanovic Exits

James Duckworth had a more positive result, progressing to the second round with a 6-3, 4-1 walkover against Canada’s Gabriel Diallo.

Diallo has been struggling with lower back issues and reportedly cut his finger on a glass bottle recently.

Duckworth is likely to face 27th seed Rafael Jodar next.

Jodar, a 19-year-old from Spain, is being compared to Rafael Nadal.

De Minaur Prepares for Match Against Samuel

Australia’s Alex de Minaur will begin his campaign against England’s Toby Samuel.

“In the qualifying he had a great win over (David) Goffin, and I’ve been able to watch a little bit of that,” de Minaur told Stan Sport.

“He hasn’t been on tour for much, he’s just come out of college. He’s playing with a lot of confidence, I’m sure he’s going to throw the kitchen sink and I’m excited for a battle. It should be a lot of fun and hopefully I can make it physical.”

Tomljanovic will begin her Wimbledon preparations at a tournament in Birmingham next year.
