Thierry Henry has discussed private text exchanges he had with Bukayo Saka following Arsenal’s UEFA Champions League semi-final victory over Atletico Madrid.
Saka scored the deciding goal in the 2-1 aggregate win at the Emirates Stadium. The 24-year-old has been managing an Achilles problem. He had recently returned to action against Fulham, scoring their second goal before being substituted.
Saka was substituted just before the 60-minute mark after his goal against Atleti. Henry then spoke about his conversations with Saka and the winger’s fitness struggles.
Henry’s Insight on Saka’s Determination
Speaking to U.S. broadcaster CBS, Henry expressed his desire for Saka to explain the less glamorous aspects of being a footballer. Henry said Saka has been questioned throughout the season.
Henry noted Saka’s determination to play despite his injury. He relayed a conversation where Saka insisted on playing against Fulham, declaring it was ‘do or die’.
Henry added: “I know what you went through the whole season, I know what you had to endure, what you were listening to from people. And what you had to do to be on that field, not only today but also against Fulham. Can you explain the pain, physically and mentally, to be able to reach a final?”
Saka’s Response to Henry’s Support
Saka acknowledged Henry’s support but chose not to elaborate on his struggles. He stated he didn’t want people to feel sorry for him. Saka added that he has to be ready for criticism if he doesn’t perform once he is on the pitch.
Saka said: “It’s not the moment. I don’t want to say I’m struggling or make people feel sorry for me. As soon as I step onto that pitch, I have to be ready for the critics if I don’t perform.”
The Hale End graduate added: “But I’m very happy today. I’ve been speaking to you throughout the season. You’ve been there for me. You know what it’s been like but today’s a very special moment.”
Saka’s Fitness Battle
Henry highlighted the physical and mental challenges Saka has faced. He emphasised the need to give credit to players who perform through injuries.
Henry said: “Today, he had to play with barely any training. I know he’s suffering with his Achilles tendon. I spoke to him and he came back and was like, ‘I’ve got to be on the pitch. I’ve got to be on the pitch against Fulham. I have to be. It’s do or die.'”
Henry noted that players often play through injuries, and Saka had to deliver for Arsenal despite not being at 100%.
Henry said: “So you have to give those guys a lot of credit. Sometimes we take it for granted. We all played through injuries. We all played with moments where you’re not 100% and he had to do it, deliver it for Arsenal.”
Henry’s comments shed light on the dedication and resilience required of footballers, even when facing physical and mental challenges.
